Chapter Two
Amelia Frobisherâs door opened immediately to their knock. Rafferty wondered if she had been waiting behind it with her eye glued to the spy hole.
Perhaps aware that her response to their knock might imply an unseemly prurience given that Clara Mortimer's attacker had left her with her skirt around her thighs, after Rafferty had introduced Llewellyn and himself, Amelia Frobisher covered her haste by adopting the superior air of one to whom prurient thoughts were foreign. And although only around five feet six and disadvantaged by her lack of stature, this didn't stop her trying to look down her long nose at them in true Grand Dame style.
After studying them for some moments through popping, pale blue eyes that indicated some thyroid problem, her inquisitiveness about her neighbour's murder overcame any inclination to aloofness and she ushered them inside with a speed that indicated her curiosity could abide no more delays.
Miss Frobisherâs apartment â like Miss Frobisher herself â was as different again from Clara Mortimerâs and Rita Atkinsâs as it was possible to be. The decor of the apartment tended to the fussy, as did the clothes style of Miss Frobisher. Perhaps she shared the late Duchess of Windsor's belief that you could never be too rich or too thin, for Amelia Frobisher was thin to the point of emaciation. Her chosen outfit of frilly, three-quarter sleeved blouse and A-line skirt with another frill adorning its hem, only served to emphasise her stick-like figure.
Rafferty, after hearing about the organising, rather bossy-sounding Miss Frobisher, had expected her to be more physically imposing.
As he had already noted, Amelia Frobisher's apartment copied the overblown, fussy style of its owner. Most of the living room was taken up by three fat pink sofas, each of which had more frills than the Rafferty familyâs heirloom baptismal gown. The blinds were those flouncy things that reminded Rafferty of womenâs old fashioned tennis bloomers. As he looked at them, in his head, he could hear his Maâs voice scorn them as dust-gatherers.
Amelia Frobisher shared one interior design preference with Rita Atkins. Photographs overflowed every surface. Invitations to weddings, christenings and birthday parties jostled for space on the mantelpiece. For all that she was an elderly spinster, it looked as though Amelia Frobisher enjoyed a rich and full life in the bosom of her family.
It was only as Rafferty got closer and studied them that he saw each of the invitations was penned by a remarkably similar hand. It occurred to him that Miss Frobisher had written them to herself in order to impress the other residents with the esteem in which she was held by her family.
From over his shoulder, Miss Frobisher's voice chilled the room by several degrees as she asked â nay insisted â he take a seat. Her tone was frosty with annoyance as though â even though the invitations were displayed for the world to see â she felt his examination of such private things showed bad manners.
He felt her popping
